Give a family in Thailand access to a bank account for a year 💖
Refugee families on the Thai/Burma border often find themselves financially stranded, making them easy targets for loan sharks. A local initiative called the Shade Tree Foundation offers a way out by setting up community micro-banks, equipping families with a year of access to banking services they otherwise wouldn't have.
Being locked in a cycle of high-interest debt severely limits a family’s options and increases their vulnerability. Providing access to a community micro-bank helps them save, borrow at fair rates, and plan for a future that's not dictated by debt. Since the program's start in 2017, around 300 households have benefited, and a remarkable 90% of families in the savings groups are debt-free within a year. It’s a game-changer, turning a vicious cycle of debt into a virtuous circle of savings and security.
